Lesson 5 | Relationship Helps

Using Testing Conjunctions

Let’s look at a step-by-step of how you can use testing conjunctions.

Pick a relationship to test.

After connecting two or more pieces with an arc, click on the logical relationship that represents your best guess.

Note the colored conjunction.

You will find it in the conjunctions list for all relationships except Question-Answer and Situation-Response (which both lack a testing conjunction and must be tested in another way).

Read the propositions with this conjunction.

You also may need to read in changes to verb forms and helping words to properly make the testing conjunction fit the grammatical structure at hand.

Consider if this is the author's intent.

Do not just seek a conjunction that works, but one that captures the proper meaning in the flow of thought.

Try out other possibilities.

Unless you are certain you have found the right relationship, try out other possibilities. In this example, Action-Result passes the test.

The concept of testing conjunctions will also help you with writing your paraphrase. While the clear conjunctions you choose to bold in your paraphrase do not have to match the testing conjunctions for the different relationships, still the testing conjunctions do stand as a great example of how to clearly represent a relationship.
