Lesson 2 | How Do We Arc?

Arcing Demonstration

Before you are released to build your first arc, let's work through one together. Consider together with us how to understand the flow of thought in Philippians 4:4-7.

Important Note

In all of our talk of logical relationships up until this point, we have spoken of the connection between one proposition to another. However, as you just saw demonstrated in the above example, after relating individual propositions we also will need to connect groups of propositions together. Thus, as you move to that second level of Arcing (something we will talk more about in a future lesson), you will need to consider how the logical relationships connect pieces and not just single propositions.

As with this demonstration, your Arcing assignments will include the practice of writing a paraphrase of the text. This paraphrase should be written after you have completed the arc and serves two primary functions. (1) Understanding. In order to capture the meaning of each proposition in different words than they are presented in your Bible translation, you must understand the meaning. Thus the practice of paraphrasing forces you to think well over each word in the passage. (2) Testing. By including clear and explicit conjunctions in bold, you thereby test out the logical relationships you have chosen, since the bolded conjunctions in your paraphrase ought to correspond to those relationships.
