Assignment: Do the Word

Complete an arc of James 1:22-25, including a paraphrase and main point summary.
Specifically:
  1. Break up the arc of James 1:22-25 into propositions.
  2. Draw arcs and indicate relationships.
  3. Write a paraphrase in the MINE column that expresses the logic.
  4. Write a succinct main point summary of the passage.

Hints

This is a long passage, but a wonderful one! Here are a couple of hints to help you connect the bigger pieces:
  1. Notice the “for” and the “if” at the beginning of v. 23. “For” is connecting v. 22 to the verses that follow, serving as one of the major connectors of this passage. On the other hand, “if” is introducing a smaller connection—a new Conditional (If/Th) relationship. To determine the two sides of this Conditional relationship, think about where it makes sense to insert an implied “then.”
  2. The “but” in v. 25 is also a major connector. It is contrasting v. 25 with either vv. 22-24 or vv. 23-24—can you figure out which?
