Lesson 3 | Support by restatement

Assignment: Philippians 1:1-2

Build a bracket of Philippians 1:1-2.

  1. Break-up the bracket of Philippians 1:1-2 into pieces. Given the lack of normal verbal ideas, just break where it seems most natural. You should end up with 6-10 propositions.
  2. Draw brackets and indicate relationships.

Hints

  • The introductory words of epistles are unique in the sense that they typically do not contain main verbs. Such is the case in this passage where the only verb is in a relative clause (and thus not the main verb). Instead of normal verbal ideas, the text presents us with the senders, the recipients, and a blessing. Still, we can think how these pieces fit together with Bracketing.
  • This bracket contains logical relationships that we have not yet covered. Do your best, looking to include a Locative or two, along with an Action-Purpose.
