Lesson 5 | Support by contrary statement

Contrary support?

Counter-intuitive relationships

The final subcategory of Subordinate relationships is Support by Contrary Statement. These relationships are set apart from Support by Distinct Statement since the distinct element is expressed in a very particular way. With these relationships, one proposition rubs against the other, and in this strange way supports the other. The examples below are especially helpful in grasping the concept.

Concessive (Csv)

Definition: A main clause that stands despite a contrary statement.
Everyday example: Even though it is not their birthday, I also got small gifts for your siblings.

Situation-Response (Sit/R)

Definition: A situation and its surprising or counter-intuitive response.
Everyday example: Her dad told her she could open up her presents and she started to cry.
