Lesson 4 | Conveying the Message

Assignment: Shared Page

Create a shared page based upon a text that you have studied via Arcing, Bracketing or Phrasing.

As you write your teaching in this assignment, consider these practical pieces of advice from C.S. Lewis, a great writer whom we could all learn from!
“Always write (and read) with the ear, not the eye. You [should] hear every sentence you write as if it was being read aloud or spoken. If it does not sound nice, try again.” “Take great pains to be clear. Remember that though you start by knowing what you mean, the reader doesn’t, and a single ill-chosen word may lead him to a total misunderstanding.” “Always try to use the language so as to make quite clear what you mean and make sure your sentence couldn’t mean anything else.” “Always prefer the plain direct word to the long, vague one. Don’t implement promises, but keep them.” “Don’t use adjectives which merely tell us how you want us to feel about the things you are describing. I mean, instead of telling us the thing is ‘terrible’ describe it so that we’ll be terrified. Don’t say it was ‘delightful'; make us say ‘delightful’ when we’ve read the description. You see, all those words (horrifying, wonderful, hideous, exquisite) are only like saying to your readers ‘Please, will you do my job for me.'” “Don’t use words too big for the subject. Don’t say ‘infinitely’ when you mean ‘very'; otherwise you’ll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite.”
Steps for this assignment:
1. Prepare an arc, bracket, or phrase of your choice. This may be work you have done in the past, or a new study. You must be the author of this work, and it should be based upon an Old Testament text. Be sure it includes a main point summary.
2. Write a sharp, concise, and Christ-focused teaching on this text in a Notes tab. This will serve as the written content of the shared page you will create.
Make sure to...
  1. Base your work on the structure of the arc, bracket, or phrase.
  2. Include at least three statements about the logic of the text.
  3. Focus on your own text and minimize cross-references.
  4. Remember to deliberately lead people to the main point of your text, which should glorify Jesus.
** Women are encouraged to write their shared page particularly for the edification of other women.

What is the level of "thickness" you will use for your intended audience?
