Lesson 3 | The Big Context

Review

Learning how to teach Scripture faithfully can feel scary!
But there are ways to avoid falling into error.

What we learned this lesson

  1. Faithful teaching of the Word demands that we faithfully teach its logic.
  2. But this doesn't mean that we cannot seek to simplify complex truths. We do want doctrinal depth, but we don't want to use unnecessarily complex language.
  3. Reasons for including cross-references when teaching on a text:
  4. To establish context
  5. To support your interpretation
  6. To support your text's implications
  7. Dangers of including cross-references when teaching on a text:
  8. Teaching your favorite message, rather than the text's message
  9. Teaching systematic theology, rather than what the specific text is teaching
  10. Teaching what the text doesn't mean
  11. Consider the following principles in deciding how to arrive at the message of the text in your teaching:
  12. Arrive in a way that promotes clarity.
  13. Arrive in a way that maintains attention and interest.
  14. Arrive in a way that leaves impact.
