Lesson 1 | The Main Point

A warning to teachers

The sober call to play with fire

When words are many, transgression is not lacking, but whoever restrains his lips is prudent,
Proverbs 10:19

Careful: to teach is to play with fire (James 3:1-5)
The danger in teaching is found in the fact that it employs a powerful area of our lives with which we all struggle. (Click here to view this Published Page and then return to continue with this lesson.)

One way for us to heed this warning from the book of James is to always let a text land on us personally before we teach it to others. Even if it is a familiar one, the scripture must speak to us afresh. We must remember that we are first and foremost hearers of the Word who must likewise be doers of it, before we can be its faithful teachers.
And we also must remember that God gives each person different gifts. Think about that. This means that others will be more gifted than you in various aspects of teaching, and some will be altogether more gifted. Don't be jealous, rejoice in this! They are our fellow soldiers in the army of God. Their skill and victory is ours as well.

The only way you can rejoice in the success of others is if you care more about the glory of Jesus than your own glory.
