Lesson 2 | Teaching With Authority

Pressing questions

What is the purpose of asking questions in a Bible study?

When should you, as the small group Bible study teacher, ask questions? And with what purpose? Their proper function can be summarized in five categories.
  • To capture attention.
  • To prompt thinking as you lead the group to the meaning of the text.
  • To gauge understanding.
  • To allow your hearers to challenge your interpretation (from the Bible).
  • To encourage the discussion of how the text intersects with our lives.

The key points from Lesson 2

  1. Small groups provide an opportunity that does not exist in a sermon or seminar; that is, participation.
  2. We are to teach faithful, and not subjective, interpretations.
