Lesson 1 | Cross-References
What We’ve Learned
A very important part of learning is being aware of what you know and what you do not yet know. For this reason, we will be reviewing our lessons with this paradigm.
What We Now Know
Cross-references are designed to help us understand a particular passage better. They do so by clarifying and giving context. The four categories of cross-references form the acronym PORT.
We do well to read the passages that the biblical writer expects us to be familiar with before studying our passage. That means we should look up the refers-back-type cross-references. But we should study and think through our particular passage before we dive into other cross-references.
What We Don’t Know
Using cross-references will never point us to all the important related passages. And the truth is: you only know one text as well as you know the entirety of Scripture. So let’s keep improving that situation by reading through our Bibles!
