In our first sentence, “I painted the picture,” the article “the” is labeled. However, it does not need a separate shelf, but rather stays with the noun it modifies. When we parse, articles will be labeled as separate entities from the nouns they modify, but will always be diagrammed with them.
The second sentence is more straight forward:
