Lesson 1: The Basics of a Sentence
The Super Sentence
Therefore Carl, the cat, woke up early and made his breakfast ready, telling himself, “Hey Carl, be happy with simple food that can help to focus the mind, lest the dog or the rabbit outwit you.”
What is this?!
This is the course super sentence! It is a single sentence with every part of speech and parsing label that you will learn in this course—that is, everything that you need to know to have a rock-solid foundation in English grammar. As we go through the lessons, we will parse and diagram this sentence piece by piece. By the end of the course, your English Grammar Cheat Sheet (starring Carl) will be all you need to diagram and parse almost any verse in the Bible.
Read through our super sentence several times each week, memorizing any parts (with parsing and diagram) that we learn in a given lesson.
Note: In order to break up the super sentence into usable pieces as we learn to parse and diagram, we will sometimes make slight modifications. For example, this week we will parse and diagram, “Carl woke up.” The phrase “the cat” that comes between “Carl” and “woke up” will be addressed in a later lesson.
