Lesson 7 | Vocab

Assignment

Translate John 1:1–5 by using the five-step translation process:
  1. Clauses: Divide the text into clauses.
  2. Main Verb: Identify the main verb in the clause. (You can easily spot the verbs, as we’ve colored them according to their tense-form. You will learn more about this coloring scheme in Greek II and beyond.)
  3. Subject: Identify the verb’s subject.
  4. An explicit subject will be in the nominative case.
  5. Some verbs just have an implicit subject.
  6. Object: Identify the verb’s object or predicate nominative.
  7. Action verbs take a direct object (usually in the accusative case).
  8. Being verbs take a predicate nominative.
  9. Some verbs do not need a direct object (like ἔρχομαι/Ι come).
  10. Extras: Identify and diagram the remaining parts.
  11. A genitive noun should go with its head noun.
  12. Keep prepositional phrases together.
  13. The article should stay with the noun it describes.
Even though original language helps are turned off in the module below, the Helps tab will give definitions for things you have not learned yet.
