Lesson 3 | First Noun Pattern

Guided Practice

In this step, we want to practice and use what we have learned to read the Greek NT. Below, you will find four verses from the Greek NT with first pattern nouns. You need to do the following things:
  1. Read the verse aloud.
  2. Parse any first pattern nouns. This means that you need to identify the noun’s lexical form (what it looks like in the nominative case), along with its case, gender, and number. For example, I would parse ἥμερᾳ by saying: dative, feminine, singular from ἥμερα. Write your answer in the box below the verse.
  3. Translate the first pattern nouns based on your parsing. Again, write your answer in the box below the verse.
Click on the video after each clause to check your work against mine, correcting your answer when needed. (Hint: I have colored the verbs in each of the videos, so you already know that those are not first pattern nouns.)

Revelation 1:20b

Note: This last example contains two first pattern nouns—only one of which is from your vocabulary. While you will not be able to translate the second, do try to identify and parse it.
