Lesson 10 | Adjectives and Adverbs

Guided Practice: John 10:14-15

It’s time to put what we learned into practice. You know the drill.
  1. Read the text aloud.
  2. Parse all the nouns and adjectives, and note the pattern each follows. Do this either verbally or using a piece of scratch paper.
  3. Diagram and translate the text by using our five-step process.
  4. Clauses: Divide the text into clauses
  5. Main Verb: Identify the main verb
  6. Subject: Identify the verb’s subject
  7. Object: Identify the verb’s object (or predicate nominative)
  8. Extras: Identify and diagram the remaining parts
  9. A genitive noun should go with its head noun
  10. Keep prepositional phrases together
  11. Watch the video to check your work.
For adjectives, you could wait to diagram them until Step 5. However, I suggest that you diagram an adjective with the word it modifies. So, if an adjective describes the verb’s subject, then diagram that adjective in Step 3 with the verb’s subject. If an adjective modifies the direct object, then diagram it in Step 4 with the verb’s direct object.
Important: The course assessment will require you to use the 5 Steps to diagram and translate 2–3 verses from the Greek NT. So take these slow and get some more good practice in now!

(1) Read aloud. (2) Diagram & translate with the 5 Steps.
