Lesson 1 | The Greek Verbal System

Guided Practice 1: Matt 4:8–9

Let’s practice translating verses from the Greek NT. Use our five-step translation process.
  1. Read the text aloud
  2. Diagram and translate the text by using our five-step process. (Verb glosses are provided in the Helps tab.)
  3. Clauses: Divide the text into clauses.
  4. Main Verb: Identify the main verb.
  5. Subject: Identify the verb’s subject.
  6. Object: Identify the verb’s object (or predicate nominative).
  7. Extras: Identify and diagram the remaining parts.
  8. Watch the video to check your work.
We colored and highlighted the main verbs in each sentence according to their tense-form. (You will learn more about this coloring scheme as we go along.) If you do not know a word or cannot remember how to parse it, click on the verse number and then on the word in the Greek verse at the bottom of the popup window. However, avoid doing this whenever possible. We suggest that you work with a piece of paper so that you can write down the parsing for each word.

You'll notice that we colored the verbs in the Guided Practice above. We won't ask you to start doing this until the first assignment in Lesson 3, but you might enjoy seeing an explanation for the text colors and highlights. You can read and download our guide below.
