Lesson 4 | Vocab

Assignment

Translate Matthew 5:13–16 by using the five-step translation process:
  1. Clauses: Divide the text into clauses. (Note that we aren't coloring or highlighting present participles now that you’ve learned them. So when you find the one present participle in this passage, color it green to show that it is in the present tense-form, and highlight it purple to show that they are participles.)
  2. Main Verb: Identify the main verb in the clause.
  3. Subject: Identify the verb’s subject.
  4. An explicit subject will be in the nominative case.
  5. Some verbs just have an implicit subject.
  6. Object: Identify the verb’s object or predicate nominative.
  7. Action verbs take a direct object (usually in the accusative case).
  8. Being verbs take a predicate nominative.
  9. Some verbs do not need a direct object (like ἔρχομαι/Ι come).
  10. Extras: Identify and diagram the remaining parts.
  11. A genitive noun should go with its head noun.
  12. Keep prepositional phrases together.
  13. The article should stay with the noun it describes.

(1) Color and highlight the present participle; (2) Divide and diagram; (3) Translate
