In this lesson, you learned three steps to complete a phrase diagram: Divide, Indent, add Arrows. Here is a summary of the guidelines we presented in the lesson:
Divide
Clauses – Divide all
all finite verbal clauses

Phrases – Divide some

adjectival participles if they have accompanying modifiers
infinitives with their own subject
infinitives expressing purpose

Indent
Clauses – Indent to the right of the first word of the clause being modified (or of the introductory clause)

OT quotations
Phrases – Indent to the right of the word being modified
subordinate phrases
adverbial participles
Indent within lines when necessary for parallel items
Add Arrows (and Boxes)
Clauses
draw a yellow arrow from a subordinate clause to the first word of the main clause
draw a green curved line to connect a relative pronoun to its antecedent
place direct discourse in a grey box
place OT quotations in a yellow box
Phrases
draw a yellow arrow pointing to the specific word being modified
