Review

In this lesson, you learned three steps to complete a phrase diagram: Divide, Indent, add Arrows. Here is a summary of the guidelines we presented in the lesson:

Divide

  • Clauses – Divide all
  • all finite verbal clauses
  • all relative clauses
  • Phrases – Divide some
  • all adverbial participles
  • adjectival participles if they have accompanying modifiers
  • infinitives with their own subject
  • infinitives expressing purpose
  • all prepositional phrases
  • Items in a list

Indent

  • Clauses – Indent to the right of the first word of the clause being modified (or of the introductory clause)
  • subordinate clauses
  • direct discourse
  • OT quotations
  • Phrases – Indent to the right of the word being modified
  • subordinate phrases
  • adverbial participles
  • Indent within lines when necessary for parallel items

Add Arrows (and Boxes)

  • Clauses
  • draw a yellow arrow from a subordinate clause to the first word of the main clause
  • draw a green curved line to connect a relative pronoun to its antecedent
  • place direct discourse in a grey box
  • place OT quotations in a yellow box
  • Phrases
  • draw a yellow arrow pointing to the specific word being modified
