Review

In this lesson, you learned about the uses of the Greek article, several ways to say “no,” and resources and strategies for continued progress in learning NT Greek. Here is a brief summary:

The Greek Article

The article makes a noun specific in a variety of ways:

  • To simply identify or distinguish one from another
  • To refer to a previously mentioned identity
  • To point to a near or present identity
  • To mark an identity par excellence, in a class all by itself
  • To mark a unique, one-of-a-kind identity
  • To mark a well-known identity

The article can stand in as a pronoun

  • When combined with μὲν and δέ or simply ὁ δέ
  • As a possessive pronoun

Nouns without an article may be ...

  • indefinite, any one of a whole class
  • qualitative or categorical
  • definite

Negation (Five Ways to Say No)

  1. οὐ[κ] + indicative
  2. οὐ[κ] + future indicative (functions as a prohibition)
  3. μή + imperative
  4. μή + aorist subjunctive (a prohibition stronger than οὐ + future indicative)
  5. οὐ μή + aorist subjunctive (the strongest negation possible)
