About the "studying with precision" series

To precisely divide the Word of God, we must learn the biblical languages. This is a long, hard road—but one with great reward. It is through a careful study of Hebrew and Greek that the gospel is guarded from false teaching. It is by the study of these ancient languages that the Church is adorned with the full counsel of God.

This course is composed of ten lessons, with each lesson ending in an assignment. A single lesson will take the average student 3–5 hours to complete. Students are invited to progress at their own pace. Your coach will inquire as to your intended pace shortly after you begin and help keep you accountable to stay on schedule.

Path courses all end with an assessment to determine your grasp of the skills learned and material covered. Successfully passing an assessment requires a high degree of understanding and is meant to serve as a motivation to take your study seriously as well as a catalyst to improve the standard of Bible study in the Biblearc community.

Students who pass the assessment will have their Biblearc account marked with a proficiency badge indicating their accomplishment. They will also earn exciting rewards. 

If you do not pass an assessment, you may retry after one week’s time.

This course seeks to equip students with the ability to read and understand the NT in Koine Greek, its original language. It’s aimed at students who don’t have any knowledge of Greek, and it intends to take them from that starting point to an ability to read and translate all non-verb elements of Koine Greek as well as non-finite verbs (finite verbs will be introduced in Greek II). The course emphasizes reading the NT in Greek, learning the fundamentals of Greek grammar well, and equipping students to use Greek in order to understand and teach the NT better. In all of this, the course seeks to magnify Jesus through the NT in its original language.

Thus far in this course, you have learned that nominative nouns primarily serve as a verb’s subject. However, there is an additional role that a nominative noun can play when the main verb is a being verb. Action verbs have a subject in the nominative and a direct object in the accusative. Being verbs (like γίνομαι and εἰμί) have a subject in the nominative. However, instead of an accusative direct object, they have a predicate noun in the nominative case as well. This predicate noun is called the predicate nominative.

Look, for example, at the first clause of Colossians 1:18.

You can see that we have a being verb (έστιν from εἰμί) and two nominative nouns: αὐτός and ἡ κεφαλή. The pronoun αὐτός is the subject nominative. But what about the other nominative noun: ἡ κεφαλή? It is the predicate nominative. In other words, this second nominative noun predicates or states something about the subject nominative. Look at another example from the last clause of John 1:1.

Here again you see that we have a being verb (ἦν from εἰμί) and two nominative nouns: ὁ λόγος and θέος. ὁ λόγος is the subject nominative, and θέος is the predicate nominative. θέος predicates or states something about the Word: “The Word was God.”

But how do we know which nominative noun is the subject and which is the predicate nominative? The general rule is that the more definite noun is the subject nominative. The following list orders different types of nouns. At #1, pronouns are the most definite and will always be the subject nominative. At #4, nouns without the article (as long as that noun is not a pronoun or a name) will probably be the predicate nominative unless the other nominative also lacks the article. 

So, with John 1:1, λόγος is more definite because it has the article. So, the sentence means: “the Word was God” rather than “God was the Word.”
