Lesson 4 | Vocab
New Vocabulary
Now it is time to learn the vocabulary words for Lesson 4. You will learn 21 new words: 12 nouns and nine verbs. Watch for cognates next to each other to aid your memory, and practice saying the words as you study them.
There is a cognate verb also spelled אוֹר. It means “to shine” in the Hiphil stem (something you will learn about in Hebrew II).
be boastful, praise (verb)
Think of the words הַלְלוּ־יָהּ (hallelujah), “praise the LORD.”
Since the Hebrew calendar is a lunar calendar, the concepts of a month and the cycle of the moon are tightly tied together.
give thanks, confess (verb)
This is the hiphil gloss. (You’ll understand this once you learn verbs in Hebrew II.)
The plural is slightly irregular: יָמִים.
There is a cognate noun used 42 times, יִרְאָה meaning “fear.”
Almost always spelled כָּל in context, but pronounced the same since its vowel is a kamatz hatuph.
The plural form (with the ים ending) is used even when speaking of a single face.
multitude, abundance, greatness (noun)
be/become great, many (verb)
Can also use the form שִׂים.
completeness, welfare, peace (noun)
The name Absalom (אַבְשָׁלוֹם) means “my father is peace.”
be complete, sound (verb)
Note: We will label nouns as feminine (f) or masculine (m) if this can’t be discerned from their form—something you will learn about in Lesson 5.
