Lesson 2 | Vocab
New Vocabulary
Now it is time to learn the vocabulary words for Lesson 2. For this lesson, you will learn 24 new words. Note that you need to memorize both the Hebrew word and its irregular plural form when given. (More on this in Lesson 5.)
Also, note that multiple definitions are often presented. Why? Because Hebrew words do not precisely equal English words. For example, sometimes it is best to translate עוֹלָם as “eternity” whereas elsewhere “long duration” communicates its meaning better. So, you will need to memorize all definitions.
Starting with the vocabulary in Lesson 4, you’ll be able to pronounce the words through simple reading, since you will have learned the vowels by then. For now, we have provided an audio recording that walks you through the list. As you listen, make sure to say the words out loud as that’s an important part of learning any language.
Lastly, you should know that the words are given in alphabetical order except for cognates (words that share a common origin). For example, שָׁמַיִם is placed immediately after מַיִם, even though it starts with one of the last letters of the Hebrew alphabet (שׁ) since it is a cognate of מַיִם.
The second word is the plural, and is included because it is irregular.
Again, the plural is irregular.
Lots of names end with this word, e.g. Daniel (“God judges”), Ezekiel (“God will strengthen”), Immanuel (“God with us”), etc.
The verbs you’ll learn nearly always have the same vowel pattern: two a-class vowels. You’ll find out why in Hebrew II.
When you see a nice house for sale, you want to “buy it.” :) Also, the plural is slightly irregular.
circuit, round about (noun)
long duration, eternity (noun)
Remember Noah’s first son Shem? His name means name!
