Lesson 2: Interpretation Is Moral

What Is the Bible?

Prayer

Lord God,
Purify our hearts. Be gracious to remove from us any skewed motivations looking to use your word instead of receiving it. We do love you because you have loved us first, and we desire to live in that love with more of our all—heart, soul and might. Strengthen us, bless us and make us wise, we pray.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.

Primary Principle

The Bible demands that we interpret it as disciples, not as critics.

Lesson Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to...
  1. ...explain several heart-level reasons our interpretation goes astray.
  2. ...understand the Bible's call for us to interpret as disciples, not as critics.
  3. ...draw comfort from the Bible's own promises of God's grace and the Holy Spirit's help as we interpret.
  4. ...explain why “keep” is the Bible's key term pertaining to true understanding.
