Lesson 6: Using The Four Branches of Theology

Reading with Ambrose

Carefully read Deuteronomy 6:4 again:
Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. —Deuteronomy 6:4
Then, based on your work from previous steps, read the following quotation.

Our First Duty (Ambrose, 340–397):

The law says, “Hear, O Israel, the Lord your God.” It did not say “speak” but “hear.” Eve fell because she said to the man what she had not heard from the Lord her God. The first word from God says to you, “hear.” —Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, vol. 3 of Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture: Old Testament, 283.

How does the quotation from Ambrose serve to (1) support your findings, (2) critique your findings, and/or (3) give additional insight?
