Lesson 9 | Identify the Structure
Markup Lens: Transitions
The Transitions lens is slightly different from the others in that the colors and labels are preset to the five types of transition markers.
1. Highlight transition markers
You may either work through the passage by focusing on one type of transition at a time or by marking up all the transition types as they occur.
Limit your highlights to the key word or phrase that marks the transition.
Notice in the example from Luke 15 that the passage presents several layers to observe:
transitions in Luke’s narrative of the events
transitions marking the three parts of the parable
transitions marking the development within each part of the parable
2. Use dot notes to record observations, questions, and other notes
Consider the function of each marker
Consider the overall flow of the passage
What details do the transitions point to?
How do the transitions help define the structure of the passage?
How do the transitions help point to the primary message of the text?
