Restate key elements with closely parallel terms
Fully unpack the figure with explanation
Reuse key words or phrases in order to preserve the figure
Use a parallel contemporary figure
Take special care in paraphrasing the NT quoting the OT.
Ask: How is the NT author using this quotation or allusion?
A prophecy directly fulfilled
An analogy drawn
A specific analogy to Christ
A comparison made
As the basis or ground for instruction
Remember:
Be consistent with the OT context of the quote
Consider bringing in additional details from the OT context
Make your understanding of the author’s usage type clear
It is appropriate to paraphrase culturally.
Don’t get stumped! …by imposing modern assumptions.
