Lesson 8 | Sub-Point Summaries

Assignment: 2Co 4:7–15

It's time to work. We've started this one for you so you can focus on the main learning objective from this lesson.
“...the chief excellency of an expounder consists in lucid brevity.”¹

Instructions:

Below, you have been given a partially completed bracket of 2Co 4:7-15 with a completed paraphrase. We’ve not completed the bracket beyond pieces with 2–8 propositions (and you need not complete it either) so as to place the focus on writing sub-point summaries.
Now it’s your job to:
  1. Read through the paraphrase and examine the brackets/relationships of the completed pieces.
  2. Place a dot note on the relationship label (or star) representing the primary point of each piece. Then, change the color of each dot note to match the relationship. This will help you remember to bring out the substance of that proposition most of all in your summary. For coordinate relationships, place the dot on the lone coordinate relationship label. The first three dot notes have already been placed for you as examples; there are four left for you to do.
  3. Write sub-point summaries within the seven dot notes.
Remember to...
  • Focus on the primary grey-dot propositions in each summary.
  • Pull in details from subordinate statements only as necessary.
  • Include the correct leading conjunction in each summary. (E.g. “But…” should start off your summary of v. 7.)
  • Bold important conjunctions within your summaries.

Place dot notes and write sub-point summaries.
