Lesson 5 | Don't miss it: identifying the main and supporting ideas

A taste of Phrasing and Bracketing

If you would like to dig deeper into this matter of discerning the main point, there are two tools at Biblearc.com that can help you. I will not get into how these tools work here—my aim is only to let you know they are available and that there are separate courses for each tool.

Phrasing focuses on the grammatical flow of the text and highlights the main point by simply identifying all the supporting pieces, so that the main point stays on the left margin.

Bracketing (along with Arcing) focuses on the logical flow of the text. A bracket has the advantage of clearly identifying the main point of the text. The brackets themselves connect to the main point of each relationship label such that the longest horizontal lines highlight the main point(s) and the primary support(s) of the whole passage.
