Discern the truth to which the idiom points
Express the idiom in an accurate and appropriate paraphrase. Consider one of the following options:
Restate key elements of the idiom with closely parallel terms
Fully unpack the idiom
Reuse key words or phrases in order to preserve the idiom
Use a parallel contemporary idiom
Encountering the Old Testament in the New
Identify the specific OT passage being referenced
Discern the meaning of the text in its OT context
Discern the NT author’s use of the OT text, including:
A prophecy fulfilled
An analogy drawn
A specific analogy to Christ
A comparison made
As the ground for instruction
Write an accurate and appropriate paraphrase
Take care to be consistent with the OT context
Use your paraphrase to unpack the NT author’s use of the OT text
Recognizing various biblical genre
