The Bible is one, unified story about Jesus. The Holy Spirit worked through a variety of human authors writing in diverse time periods, languages, and genres to write a single story with a single central focus—Jesus. And this is how the Bible demands to be read. As we read the NT, we must read its events, people, and teachings in light of the OT. Likewise, we must read the OT as the first part of a larger story that finds its fulfillment and goal in the NT. The Bible demands to be read as one, unified story about Jesus.
The Four-Part Story of the Bible
Just like any good story, God wrote this best of stories to have different parts and stages. Just like the story of Harry Potter changes when Voldemort returns in The Goblet of Fire, so too the Bible demands that we read it in light of these major turning points.
What are some of the key turning points in the biblical story? How do these turning points affect the story?
The Bible itself organizes its story into four parts: (1) creation (2) fall (3) redemption and (4) consummation. Each of these stages in the story is distinct. Humanity before the Fall differs greatly from humanity after the Fall. The setting of the story is remarkably different when we compare the earth after the Fall to the new earth after Jesus returns. The Bible demands that we read it as a four-part story that moves from Creation to Fall to Redemption to Consummation. We will briefly examine each part of the story in the next four steps.
