As we come to the end of this second lesson, I hope that you have begun to see how the Bible demands that we identify Jesus as God the Son Incarnate, fully God and fully man. When the apostles read the OT, they saw the glory of Jesus there just as Jesus had taught them and just as the Spirit enlightened them.
Let's make this practical. What do you do when a Jehovah's Witness comes to your door? Often, they claim to believe in the same Jesus we do. They often use the Bible to support their claims.
We need not fear Jehovah's Witnesses. Indeed, we ought to love them! We need not fear the fact that Jehovah's Witnesses read the same Bible that we do but answer the question of this course differently. Jehovah's Witness remain blind to the glory of Jesus, and so they do not read the Bible as the Bible demands to be read. We ought to love them by sharing about who Jesus really is and praying that the Holy Spirit opens their eyes to see his glory.
So, when a Jehovah’s Witness comes to my door to tell me that Jesus is a powerful, godlike creature but not fully God, I bring them to the Scriptures. I bring them to Psalm 89:8–9:
Who is like you, LORD God Almighty? You, LORD, are mighty, and your faithfulness surrounds you. You rule over the surging sea; when its waves mount up, you still them!
Then, I bring them to Psalm 107:28-30:
Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he brought them out of their distress. He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed. They were glad when it grew calm, and he guided them to their desired haven.
Until finally, I bring them to Mark 4:39–41:
Jesus got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, 'Quiet! Be still!' Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. He said to his disciples, 'Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?' They were terrified and asked each other, 'Who is this man? Even the wind and the waves obey him!'
The Bible leaves us with only one answer. Who is this man that needs sleep because of his weariness yet speaks to stop the storm? He is Jesus, our Lord and Messiah, God the Son Incarnate.
Prayer
We praise you for Christ, our King! Thank you for giving us such a perfect savior!
As we finish this lesson, may your Spirit continue to strengthen our love and desire for him. We ask that the goodness and covenant love of the Lord Jesus would pursue us all the days of our lives, until we dwell with him in your house forever!
