Lesson 6: The Covenantal Horizon
Recommended Resources
All the books I quoted from in this lesson will help you understand biblical theology better. But I have included what I think are some of the best resources below.
(If you want to go deeper, check out Zondervan’s free, annotated, comprehensive bibliography of 101 resources, listed in 5 categories and from easiest to hardest. It is quite possibly the best bibliography on biblical theology available.) Free Resources for Using Biblical Theology in Bible Study

Comprehensive Studies
These books cover each book of the Bible, keeping the main theme(s) of Scripture in focus. Beale and Carson specifically focus on quotations of the OT in the NT.
Commentary Series
There are many volumes in this still-growing series, whether on interpreting individual books in light of biblical theology, or exploring a particular theme of biblical theology throughout the Bible’s story arc. Be sure to explore this list of D.A. Carson’s brief summaries of each volume, including each volume published up to 2018. The page also contains a link to a master Scripture index for the entire series. Videos
Resources for Studying Haggai in the Light of Biblical Theology
In my annotated bibliography on Haggai (see below), the best commentary that covers biblical theology is Mark Boda’s volume in the NIV Application Commentary series. Next on the list would be Alec Motyer’s section in Volume 3 of The Minor Prophets trilogy, edited by Thomas McComiskey. (Motyer’s commentary, in fact, will help you focus on any of the four disciplines of theology in the study of Haggai.) Stead’s commentary in the ESV Expository Commentary series is also excellent, and remember: you have free access to it on Biblearc Books! Follow the instructions at the bottom of this page to get it, if you haven’t yet done so.
