Lesson 4: Non-Verbal Modifiers
Pattern #5: S-Vt-IO-DO
With the indirect object we are ready to learn our fifth and final sentence pattern, S-Vt-IO-DO. All simple sentences will fall into one of the five sentence patterns we have learned, and complex sentences (which we will look at next lesson) simply contain an assortment of these patterns. You will also notice that things like vocatives, prepositional phrases and other parts of speech or grammatical structures are not included in any of the sentence patterns. This is because these are “extras” in the sense that they are added on to modify the basic pattern.
Let’s look at one more example of a parsed S-Vt-IO-DO sentence.
Diagramming the Fifth Sentence Pattern
This is the indirect object shelf. Unlike some of our other shelves, which do double and triple duty, the IO shelf is only for the indirect object.
Let’s now diagram our sentences about Paul and Jenny.
An IO shelf may be stacked with a non-verbal shelf just like when you have multiple non-verbal shelves (but it does not have to be). Just be sure to connect the IO shelf first.
