Lesson 9 | Vocab

Assignment

Translate John 1:9–13 by using the five-step translation process:
  1. Clauses: Divide the text into clauses.
  2. Main Verb: Identify the main verb in the clause. (Again, you can easily spot the verbs, as they are colored according to their tense-form.)
  3. Subject: Identify the verb’s subject.
  4. An explicit subject will be in the nominative case.
  5. Some verbs just have an implicit subject.
  6. Object: Identify the verb’s object or predicate nominative.
  7. Action verbs take a direct object (usually in the accusative case).
  8. Being verbs take a predicate nominative.
  9. Some verbs do not need a direct object (like ἔρχομαι/Ι come).
  10. Extras: Identify and diagram the remaining parts.
  11. A genitive noun should go with its head noun.
  12. Keep prepositional phrases together.
  13. The article should stay with the noun it describes.
