Lesson 3 | Present Participles
Assignment (Part 1)
Find and parse the present (imperfective) participles.
Look through Matthew 5:1–12 to find the present participles. You do not need to translate these verses, just find the present participles. Then color them green to show that they are in the present tense-form, and highlight them purple to show that they are participles.
Next, copy or write each present participle from the phrasing module and paste it into the notes module. (Open the Notes tab by clicking the up arrow button.)
Finally, parse the participle. Include its tense-form, voice, case, gender, number, and lexical form.
ὢν – present, active, participle, nominative, masculine, singular from εἰμί
θέλων – present, active, participle, nominative, masculine, singular from θέλω
A Little Extra Help
The very first word, Ἰδὼν, looks like it could be a present participle given its form. But this word does not use the present stem and therefore is not a present participle. Besides this, you should be able to correctly identify the present participles in the text. Just remember that vowel mergers may change the initial ο of the tense formers οντ and ομεν into another vowel or vowel combo.
