Lesson 8 | Vocab
The Forgetting Curve
How well do you know the vocab words from Greek I?
If your answer is a 1, 2, or 3, here are some tips to revitalize your memory.
When you first memorize vocabulary, or indeed anything else, if you don't review what you've learned, you forget it quickly.
The website Elearning Industry describes what is known as "Ebbinghaus’ forgetting curve," named after the 19th-century psychologist who discovered it. Here's the gist of the problem: "In a training context, the forgetting curve shows that learners will forget an average of 90% of what they have learned within the first month."¹
But if you regularly review what you've learned, your retention keeps improving, so you forget less and less:
So "by reviewing new information at key moments on the Forgetting Curve, you can reduce the rate at which you forget it!"²
For that reason, we encourage you to review all your vocab regularly. You can use the Quizlet app, or their website; you can use the Google Sheet we made with vocab (here is the sheet for Greek III); you can use any other method you choose. Just make sure that you are always reviewing. The more words you know, the more you will enjoy your reading and diagramming! If you currently have a method of vocab review, what is it? What have you found helpful about it?
