Lesson 3 | Vocab
Be Encouraged!
I once read a review of an online, modern language learning program that stated modestly, “after completing this course you will be able to communicate like a reasonably cosmopolitan three-year old.” That might not sound very hopeful, but, in fact, it is not bad at all. Most of the three year-olds I know can handle themselves pretty well in a conversation.
The average three-year old has a vocabulary of around 1,000 words! By comparison, there are approximately 5,400 different words in the Greek NT. By the end of Greek IV, you will know the 320 words that occur in the NT 50 times or more. Add to that number the many words you have learned from your memory passages. And more still, there are all the cognates that you are able to recognize intuitively. In other words, you are well on your way to that cosmopolitan three-year old status! Actually, much further along than that because of the grammar and syntax that you have learned as well as the maturity of your understanding. All of which means that you are making great progress toward being able to pick up your Greek NT and read with understanding.
So, what do you need most? To expand your vocabulary. The next step has 12 new words for you.
