Lesson 3 | Vowels

Review

If you have the time and would like to expose yourself to more Modern Hebrew pronunciation of the Bible, the הכתובים website (meaning: “The Scriptures”) is an excellent resource. There, you can easily listen to any portion of the Hebrew Bible read aloud. Just know that the audio recording is primarily meant for Israelis and thus read at a pace that will initially be hard for you to keep up with.

What we learned this lesson

  1. The different dots and lines included around the Hebrew letters
  2. Vowels
  3. Doubling
  4. Cantillation
  5. The placement of the Hebrew vowels
  6. The different vowel classes
  7. Guttural letters that prefer a-class vowels: א, ח, ה, ע, ר
  8. The furtive patach (when a ח or ע comes at the end of a word and the vowel sound precedes the sound of the letter)
