Earlier in 1 Kings 19, Elijah fled after Jezebel threatened to kill him because of the brouhaha on Mount Carmel. God brought him to Mount Horeb, where Moses had seen the burning bush, and there reveals his presence—not in a hurricane, an earthquake, or a fire, but in “a low whisper” (v. 12).

  • וַיְהִ֣י — A verb with this root, and in this form, often begins a narrative section. Here it is followed by another sequential-imperfect verb, which can be translated beginning with “that.”
  • אֵלִיָּהוּ — Sound out this name; it sounds a little different in Hebrew than in English.
