Lesson 6 | Expansion and contraction: the art of summarizing
Encouragement & review
Lesson Review
Why Summarize?
To test your understanding of the text
To clearly communicate truth to others
To better discern the main point of the whole chapter or book
While paraphrasing generally expands the text, a summary will significantly shrink the text.
Strategies for shaping the main point summary
Be sure you have clearly identified the main point and primary supports
Is the main point about who, what, when, where, why, or how?
Determine what, if any, primary supporting points should be included
There is freedom to rearrange the pieces
Use key terms or phrases from your paraphrase
Use complete sentences
Maintain the same perspective as the author
Keep it concise
What not to do
Do not simply rearrange the words and phrases of the original text
Do not write in commentary style
Do not add in your own opinion or assessments
Do not include every detail
Do not make present day applications
