Lesson 4: The Contextual Horizon (2)
Genesis 50:15-21: Discussing the Text
We’re going to stay in Genesis, the same book we covered in the previous lesson, so we can build on what we already discovered about the setting of Genesis. But we’re going to move to chapter 50, so that we can see details from a different story that we would miss without both discovering its setting and discussing its text with commentaries.
Remember the order of Bible study that we’ve learned: First, perform the first step of Bible study, engaging the biblical text itself through a method like paraphrasing, arcing, bracketing, or phrasing. Then we take the second step, engaging wisely with extrabiblical resources for each of the Five Horizons. But even when we do that, we still start by digging into the text, and only then will we turn to commentaries.
I reminded you about that because in the video that follows, it’s going to look like I’m jumping straight over digging into the text myself and straight into using extrabiblical resources. I did go through the first step and explore both the historical and textual context on my own. But for time’s sake, I’ll only be able to summarize my own work as briefly as possible. Then I’ll spend the rest of the time showing you how commentaries boosted my understanding of the passage.
I’ve included links to my arc/bracket and phrase of Genesis 50:15–21 below, so you can see the structure, logic, and grammar of the passage.
