Lesson 4: The Contextual Horizon (2)
Why Does Discussing the Text Matter?
Let’s take a step back before we review this lesson, and ponder this: If we hadn’t asked the microscope and telescope questions through commentaries, what would we have missed?
We wouldn’t have marvelled at the beauty of Joseph’s forgiveness against the dark backdrop of the brothers’ accurate description of their sin.
We wouldn’t have seen how this story shows the first time that true unity was brought about among God’s people.
We wouldn’t have seen the beautiful parallels between the ending of Genesis and the book of Exodus.
We wouldn’t have understood the centrality of the theme of good and evil both in the story and in the whole book of Genesis.
We wouldn’t have enjoyed the beauty of a broader view of Genesis, the Torah, and the Bible through the theme of blessing and cursing.
We wouldn’t have seen the parallel between Jacob’s and Joseph’s deaths and how we as believers today should die in faith, like they did.
We wouldn’t have been encouraged by the big story of God’s faithfulness to his promises, culminating in the true Israel, Jesus Christ, who suffered for and delivered his people from sin.
