We’ve come a long way in this course! Let’s take a moment to sit down, gaze at the view, and see if we can capture where we’ve been in one snapshot.
The First Nine Lessons
Lesson 1: Sola Scriptura teaches that Scripture is authoritative, sufficient, and clear. However, this doctrine also teaches that we need the church and human teachers, creeds and confessions, and extrabiblical knowledge to understand and obey the Bible.
Lesson 2: When studying a Bible passage, you should engage with the text yourself through a method such as Arcing before engaging with extrabiblical resources.
You should use good commentaries and other extrabiblical resources (see Lesson 5) to help you interpret Scripture, using the Five Horizons of Bible study.
Lessons 3–4: In the Contextual Horizon, you use extrabiblical resources to discover the setting of a passage and to discuss the text itself.
Lesson 6: In the Covenantal Horizon, you use extrabiblical resources to correctly place your passage within the biblical story, so you can see and savor how it points to Jesus.
Lesson 7: In the Canonical Horizon, you use extrabiblical resources to correctly interpret your passage in the context of the whole Bible’s unified teaching for the sake of right living.
Lesson 8: In the Confessional Horizon, you use extrabiblical resources from church history like creeds, confessions, and old books to shape your interpretation of the Bible.
Lesson 9: In the Contemporary Horizon, you use extrabiblical resources to help you apply your passage to the life of the church so that you can glorify God by responding rightly to his Word.
Our tour of the book of Haggai also led us to many unexpected views of Jesus’ glory, transforming our hearts and minds.
